Song: The Promise
By:	Tracy Chapman
Album:	New Beginnings

I haven't yet had the time to write down how it is picked,
but you can figure it out by ear without much trouble.

capo on 4th fret

INTRO: A Amaj7/G# Dmaj9 (repeat)

VERSE:
A Amaj7/G# Dmaj9 A/E
If you wait for me
Then I'll come for you
  C#m Dmaj7 E
Although I've travelled far
  C#m Dmaj7 D E7 A -- repeat intro chords twice
I always hold a place for you in my heart

(repeat verse chords)
If you think of me
If you miss me once in a while
Then I'll return to you
I'll return and fill that space in your heart

CHORUS:
A E F#m Dmaj7 E A E F#m
Remembering your touch, your kiss, your warm embrace,
     Dmaj7 E A E F#m
I'll find my way back to you
   Dmaj7 E E7 A -- repeat intro as before
If you'd be waiting

VERSE:
If you dream of me
Like I dream of you
In a place that's warm and dark
In a place where I can feel the beating of your heart

Oh I've longed for you
And I have desired
To see your face, your smile
To be with you wherever you are

REPEAT CHORUS

VERSE:
I've longed for you
And I have desired
To see your face your smile
To be with you wherever you are

LAST CHORUS:
Remembering your touch, your kiss, your warm embrace,
I'll find my way back to you
Please say you'll be waiting

FINALE:
F#m Dmaj7 E A E F#m
Together again, it would feel so good to be
       Dmaj7 E A E F#m
In your arms Where all my journeys end
                   Dmaj7 E A E F#m
If you can make a promise If it's one that you can keep
  Dmaj7 E A E7 A Amaj7/G# Dmaj9 A/E E
I vow to come for you If you wait for me

A place for me in your heart

(sing last line three times over intro chords and quit)
